Facelift: When to Consider It and What to Expect

Facelift: When to Consider It and What to Expect

What does a facelift correct?

A facelift (rhytidectomy) repositions the soft tissues of the face and neck to correct the sagging that appears over time: deep folds, a double chin, and loss of jawline definition. It's not a treatment for fine wrinkles or for changing the shape of one's features — it's meant to restore firmness and contour.

Who is a candidate?

In general, candidates are people with moderate to advanced sagging in the face and neck, good overall health, and realistic expectations about the result — a facelift rejuvenates, but it doesn't stop the natural aging process. An in-person or video evaluation helps determine which specific technique is the best fit for each face.

Can it be combined with other facial procedures?

Yes, it's common to combine it with complementary procedures (such as eyelid surgery or neck-area treatments) for a more harmonious result. This is decided case by case during evaluation, depending on which areas each patient wants to address.

Recovery

Initial recovery involves swelling and bruising that progressively decrease over the first two weeks, use of facial support garments as directed, and specific care for scarring (which, in experienced hands, is concealed along the hairline and the natural folds of the ear). Return to social activities is usually possible within the first few weeks, always depending on each patient's individual progress.
